for good. kristen dahlgren is live for us in venice, louisiana. so another good morning. how is it going at this point? >> reporter: hey, good morning, alex. we're still waiting for any word to come from about 50 miles off the coast here where that operation is under way. the last we heard from bp was some time yesterday afternoon that they had started the cementing process. that started at about 1:30 local time. it was expected to take a few hours. then they needed to let that cement cure. after that they were going to do their pressure test. then at that point they would be able to declare this well killed, that it would never again leak any oil into the gulf of mexico. they did expect to make that announcement at some point today. so we are still waiting. this comes after a long summer of waiting for this bottom kill. the relief well took several months to saúÑ1!xúan"jdrill. dr beneath the floor of the gulf. they met up with that original well and then began this cementing process. so kind of an exclamation point on top of this static kill that they already did that stopped the flo

, whether they actually believe there's a moral equivalency there or they don't and they're using it for political purposes. either way, whichever it is, this is not just bad domestic politics for the president, and it is and they know it, for a variety of reasons, including it takes him off the economy and divides him from democrats, which is a big problem on a range of issues, but i almost resist talking about this as a political issue. this is a national security crisis. both of these issues are. you have general petraeus getting involved in a domestic matter of the first amendment issue shows the extraordinary extent to which people in the military are -- men and women overseas think this is a big enough deal, and to have it to be brought into domestic politics and inflamed by republicans, again, out of principle, maybe, out of political purposes maybe, whatever the reason is really a national and international tragedy. and unfortunately the president, for a variety of reasons, is too weak on his own to deal with it. >> i think you're right. howard? >> well, sitting in the pre

england. the outer banks, they see a ton of storms. huge storms all the time. the trees and buildings used to it. eastern new england, the leaves are still on the trees and may do more damage out there on the cape. waiting for tonight to see how that plays out. radar, of the storm, ron in the last rain band from the storm and probably in sunshine in an hour or two. winds in delaware and maryland, no big deal. wildwood to atlantic city, gusting 20 to 30 miles per hour. so really the mid-atlantic not an issue. as the storm heads northwards, notice cape cod far to the east there. that's why it's going to see the stronger winds. rain showers moving up into new england and long island. you have to be out there on the end of long island to be hit by the storm. as far as the stormwise, a different view. hurricane warnings for cape cod. large waves are now arriving and that forecast path brings the storm closest to eastern new england right around 10:00 p.m. tonight for the reporters blowing in the breeze out there. i think we have escaped this one. it is underachieved. >> all right. bill karins,

rocks at passing american con voice. and there were protests in indonesia. u.s. general david petraeus has warned the anger is so intense, the pastor's actions could endanger u.s. troops in afghanistan and could actually end up helping the taliban. nbc's tom aspell is in kabul, afghanistan. what's the big concern if the pastor goes through on his threat to burn the koran? >> well, contessa, simply that afghans will react violently to it. now, general david petraeus in an e-mail in response to questions from the associated press about the affair said today, images of a koran burning would undoubtedly be used by extremists on both sides, in afghanistan and around the world to enflame public opinion and to incite violence. he went further, he said, burning of a koran would put the safety of our troops and american civilians in afghanistan at risk, and would also compromise the mission here. i think what the general is saying is that afghans are in danger of going into the streets and turning against any american military they see, any american civilians. there is precedent for unrest like

ranking and now a decision on whether tiger would play on the u.s. ryder cup team. >>> we begin with developing news. sources tell nbc news a plea deal may be in the works for that so-called fed-up flight attendant who jumped out of the airplane and right down the chute. steven slater appeared in a new york city court just a few hours ago. he faces criminal charges after his apparent melt down on the plane that had just landed at new york's jfk airport. nbc's jeff rosin is live. jeff, what do we know happened in court here? >> reporter: tamron, a couple minutes ago we had a chance to ask the d.a. about the reports. it is confirmed in fact that the d.a. is prepared to reduce the charges or get rid of them entirely perhaps if steven slater successfully completes a treatment program. in court today slater agreed to be evaluated by a medical and mental health professional if that happens and if all those according to plan. slater could enter that program which could, according to the d.a., include anger management classes and alcohol and substance abuse treatment program. that would
